Fisherman accused of breaching internet cable zone

A NSW fisherman will face court again in February after he allegedly breached a submarine cable protection zone near Sydney and trawled across the undersea fibre links.

The 51 year old man from Arncliffe in Sydney's south is accused of conducting a prohibited activity "namely trawling" in the Norther Sydney submarine cable protection zone on five separate occasions beginning October 2007.

The northern protection zone covers an area between Narrabeen and Collaroy in Sydney's north.

Cables at risk included the GONDWANA-1, Southern Cross, Australian Japan and the Australia Papua New Guinea 2 cable.

If convicted, the man could face up to 12 years in prison.
