Does Apple's "iPad" live up to all the hype?

While Apple's presentation this morning was heavily focused on Apple's bread and butter, the consumer market, it's clear that they've not given up on the enterprise just yet. The iPad weighs about 700 grams and is slightly smaller than an A4 notebook.

Apple sees this as a device that bridges the gap between the notebook and iPhone. But as yet it's hard to know whether the market really likes actual tablet computers or the idea of tablets.

The wraps are off as Apple unveils new tablet device

Called the "iPad," the device is Apple's biggest product launch since the iPhone three years ago, and arguably rivals the smartphone as the most anticipated in Apple's history.

After months of feverish speculation on the Internet and among investors, Jobs took the stage at a jam-packed theatre in San Francisco and, with his famed showman's flair, began detailing the device's basic features.

Corporate spy risk from free email

Gmail, Yahoo! Mail and Hotmail "completely vulnerable" by default.

Small business users of Gmail, Yahoo! mail and Hotmail were vulnerable to corporate spies when logged into their accounts on public Wi-Fi networks, a penetration tester has found.

Business users of public Wi-Fi hotspots, such as those at cafes, who sent commercially sensitive information were at risk, said Hacklabs tester Chris Gatford.

Employees of small businesses often used free email services as their main business email accounts.

"By default, users of all three popular webmail services are completely vulnerable once logged in via public Wi-Fi," Gatford said.

Spammers taking advantage of free online hosters?

Security giant McAfee warned today that spammers are increasingly exploiting online hosting companies that provide free domains and web hosting, in order to bypass anti-spam filters.

In the vendor's December 2009 Spam Report, McAfee Labs anti-spam technology lead Adam Wosotowsky and director of product marketing Elan Winkler argued that the trend has turned into "an all-out gold rush".

"Using a free hosting service is a good tactic for spammers because it is easier to automatically block a new infected web site than to block a site that has been around for a longer period and has possibly had legitimate traffic associated with it," the report explained.
